Do what you love for work
I have a confession to make.
I’ve never been able to keep a job I didn’t love.
It’s hard for me to do much if my heart isn’t into it.
Whether that be friendships, relationships, work, or even spiritual pursuits. I am not able to do it unless I feel it deeply.
This has not always been an easy path for me.
I tried to change my career many times. I researched, interviewed, got the job and went through all the training. But I couldn’t go on when I realized it simply wasn’t right for me.
No matter how much money they paid me.
How did I know it wasn't the right job?
I couldn’t get up and do it.
One job I had in pharmaceutical sales I kept being late for work.
One day I didn’t get out of the door until noon.
When I was going to school to be a physician’s assistant; I would dread the train ride to my classes.
I left after months of trying to make it work.
When I was teaching elementary school (although I loved the children) I would be happier because of a day off or a snow day then I was teaching.
I left after the school year ended.
I know it may seem normal to not love what you do.
I mean TGIF right? But that's an uninspiring belief we have been sold in my opinion.
I left so many jobs but always found my way back to helping people with their health.
Some people around me thought I was flaky and would never find what I wanted to do.
I have to be honest that I judged myself harshly at times.
But I knew I wanted to do more than just be a personal trainer as great of a job as it was.
Plus, how could I teach people to take care of their health when they didn’t have a life they loved?
Why would they want to do the work that it took to care for themselves? (I eventually figured a way to do this!)
That’s when I became a coach.
I hired a lot of coaches to help me figure out what I truly wanted to do for a living and to see the steps through.
Little did I know that the coaching I received was my answer.
Every time I left a session, I learned something about life and myself. It was and still is thrilling.
I became a better deeper more inspired person, and I really loved it. I loved the growth and connection.
I remember at one coaching seminar I attended the teacher asked a question.
What’s one thing in your life that you could do that would bring the most amount of meaning to you and good into the world?
It hit me like a bolt of lightning.
For me it would be to help people through life.
To understand who they are and to live a rich meaningful life that they love.
I wanted to help people serve the world and to fall in love with their life.
Who helps us with that?
This is also what I wanted when I was younger from those around me. Yet my relatives had so many problems of their own that they could offer little to guide me to what God put me here to do.
It’s unfortunate but I see very few people living a life they truly love.
Quite the opposite; I believe a lot of the drama addiction anxiety and depression that are seen in the world is because of people not living a life that they can be living.
What’s really sad to me is that’s not the way it’s supposed to be.
You see each of us has so much within us and each person has something to offer.
It’s a journey for sure and it takes trial and error, exploration and keeping that idea primary in your life.
But what else are we to do?
Sure, we can busy ourselves with entertainment, food, drugs, sex, or anything that’s pleasurable?
But do these things last?
And in the end will we be proud of how we have lived?
Might there be more?
I heard this quote that I loved.
"When a person can't find a deep sense of meaning, they distract themselves with pleasure.” Viktor E. Frankl
So, if this touched you then it’s touching something within you.
Don’t let that spark go out. Find what you are here to do and do it.
If you’d like to discuss this, reply back and let’s talk it though on a complementary call.
Regardless of whether you use my help or not, don’t give up on living a life that you would truly love.
All the best,
Bert
